RS485/422 Transceivers

The RS485 standard (formally TIA-485) specifies differential data transmission over a terminated twisted pair at up to 10Mbps. The standard specifies electrical characteristics of a driver and receiver, and does not specify any data protocol or connectors. RS485 is popular for inexpensive local networks, multidrop communication links and long haul data transfer over distances of up to 4,000 feet. The use of a balanced line means RS485 has excellent noise rejection and is ideal for industrial and commercial applications. The RS422 standard is similar to the RS485 standard but does not permit multiple drivers on a bus. Similarly, the Profibus (Process Field Bus) protocol uses RS485’s popular physical medium when deploying fieldbus solutions in factory and process automation environments.

Linear Technology offers a broad selection of industry standard, low power CMOS RS485 and RS422 interface transceivers featuring high data rates, high ESD protection, failsafe receivers, and high voltage versions for rugged environments. Our latest RS485/RS422 transceivers feature pin-controlled switchable 120Ω termination resistors that minimize physical user intervention when reconfiguring networks, and fully balanced receiver thresholds that help maintain good duty cycle symmetry at low signal levels.
