IO-Link Transceivers

IO-Link (IEC 61131-9) is a 24V communications interface that allows smart sensors and actuators to exchange advanced configuration, status and diagnostics information using a powerful, yet simple protocol.  IO-Link specifies point-to-point communication over a maximum of 20m using standard 3-/4-/5-wire cables and M5/M8/M12 connectors, allowing re-use of existing cables or simplifying connections in many traditional industrial applications. IO-Link “masters” provide communication over standard fieldbuses (i.e. Ethernet, RS485, etc.) with any IO-Link “device” (smart sensor or actuator).  Each master port provides both power and data over a single cable to each device.  IO-Link devices are plug-n-play, contain an electronic profile (IODD or IO Device Description), and are all managed using a single master configuration tool GUI, making it simple and cost-effective to implement, maintain and troubleshoot systems.

Linear Technology offers PHY interfaces for both sides of the IO-Link cable.  The LTC2874 quad IO-Link master transceiver integrates an N-channel Hot Swap controller for each port and is ideal for building rugged multiport masters that need to operate in harsh, industrial environments.  Unique features include ±50V line fault protection, automatic Wake-Up Request (WURQ) generation to reduce microcontroller demands, and an output supply current-boosting capability for device start-up. The LT3669 IO-Link device transceiver integrates a 300mA step-down (buck) regulator and a 150mA LDO to provide all of the power required for the internal electronics in a sensor or actuator.  Unique features include 7.5V to 40V operation, ±60V line fault protection, up to 500mA line driving capability, and a minimal residual voltage of less than 2V.  The LTC2874 and LT3669 operate seamlessly together and provide extremely robust solutions for both ends of the cable.
